COVID, Colds, Flu, Asthma, CF, and even pollution. There are so many things that effect how easy (or not) it is to simply breathe. Lexi has both asthma and CF, and the winter months are particularly hard on her. I’ve always been very aware of the effect of what candles we burn have on her, and recently I’ve done a lot of research on the effects of oils on breathing. I do not like when I see someone post things like “I can cure an asthma attack with these simple oils…” No, and if someone you follow posts something similar, make sure that you stop following them immediately! Oils can impact everyone differently, and anyone with integrity should always encourage you to work with your medical team, and explore oils with caution, when you have severe medical conditions. Ensure that your oils are pure, understand how the blends you are using are made, and never be afraid to ask questions.
All that said, let’s talk about blends and breathing. As always I come to you with my experience, and you can trust that the blends I am writing about are tested and used in our home. My personal research led me to the impacts of diffusing eucalyptus to help improve respiratory health. Diffusing eucalyptus has multiple benefits beyond respiratory health, and I’ll share a few random ones with you below.
Today I want to focus on respiratory health. There is a constant state of coughing in my home, and this isn’t anything new, but in a COVID world every cough comes with a stare and a fear. I believe we all have heightened awareness for our health and the health of everyone around us. For my family I chose Young Living’s RC Essential Blend to help manage our respiratory health issues. This does not replace inhalers or breathing treatments. RC has become another tool to improve health and quality of daily life.
The image above does a wonderful job of outlining the multiple benefits of RC. Lexi’s Cystic Fibrosis means that she has a build up of mucus in all parts of her bodies. Eucalyptus helps her by reacting with the mucous membranes and naturally helping to thin the mucus and reduce mucus production. This will benefit anyone suffering through a respiratory illness. As the mucus thins it is easier for the ill person to cough it up and expel the mucus. Of course use caution if you have experienced any allergic reactions to eucalyptus, as this may have the opposite reaction for you.
Did your grandma ever tell you to go grab the Vicks VapoRub when you weren’t feeling well? Did she have a keen awareness that Vicks used eucalyptus as an active ingredient to sooth what ills you? Probably not, she simply knew it worked. Weather you are using Eucalyptus via the diffuser, or creating a message oil or soothing lotion, the benefits of eucalyptus essential oil remains as beneficial as in your grandma’s days. Why use essential oils instead of grabbing a jar of Vicks? For me it is about purity. When possible simplifying and removing additives, means that my family is obtaining the benefit without all of the additional unknowns. When you have allergies, or have a complex medical condition, many times you may not have the positive effects of a treatment because of all of the additives in a treatment. In addition if you are taking a large amount of medications for a medical condition, it is important to know how any additive may react to the medications that your doctor has prescribed.
I caution friends when using essential oils for many reason. The blend above, used in my small home office, blends two drops of RC with two drops of Thieves. Anything more would be extremely overpowering, and override any benefit that I would be receiving from the oils. When people talk about the risks of essential oils there are ways to mitigate risks, and as the consumer it is critical that you be aware. Below are best practices that I recommend to friends when incorporating essential oils.
While RC is my current breathing oil of choice there are many other Eucalyptus containing Young Living Essential Oils. You can also buy Eucalyptus Oil in it’s purest form. Below are a few of our most prominent Young Living Eucalyptus Oils and Blends.
From YL: Eucalyptus Radiata essential oil comes from the leaves of an evergreen tree native to Australia. Part of the Myrtaceae plant family, Eucalyptus Radiata is steam distilled. Its distinctly fresh aroma is sharp and clean, sparking a sense of refreshment and renewal. Popular in salons and spas, Eucalyptus Radiata oil promotes a stimulating and rejuvenating environment anywhere it’s diffused. The soothing scent makes Eucalyptus Radiata the perfect addition to any bedtime routine when applied to the chest or back. It is found in many of Young Living’s most popular products, including Ortho Ease® massage oil, Breathe Again™ Roll-On, and R.C.™ essential oil blend.
From YL: Eucalyptus Blue is grown and distilled on Young Living’s farm in Ecuador. This essential oil is high in eucalyptol, which has a calming and invigorating scent when diffused.
From YL: Raven™ essential oil blend is a cool, refreshing combination of Eucalyptus Radiata, Lemon, Peppermint, Ravintsara, and Wintergreen essential oils. A chilly, minty blend with sweet undertones, Raven creates a cooling sensation and provides a comforting aroma when applied topically to the chest and throat. Like an effervescent breeze through a grove of eucalyptus trees, Raven provides a refreshing aromatic experience when diffused or inhaled directly. The naturally occurring constituents eucalyptol, menthol, and methyl salicylate provide an invigorating and empowering experience, particularly before or after a workout or when winding down for the evening.
From YL: Thieves® essential oil blend is a powerful combination of Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Eucalyptus Radiata, Lemon, and Rosemary essential oils that fills any space with a rich, spicy aroma. As one of our most popular products, it’s no wonder Thieves is included in so many of our home cleaning and personal care products. It is a key ingredient in Thieves® Household Cleaner, Thieves® Waterless Hand Purifier, Thieves® Wipes, and Thieves® Foaming Hand Soap. Thieves is your go-to for an invigoratingly clean and spicy scent that smells more like fall baking than harsh cleaning formulas.
From YL: R.C.™ is a powerful blend of Cypress, Spruce, and three types of Eucalyptus oils (E. citriodora, E. globulus, and E. radiata). Diffuse or apply it topically before, during, or after your workout. You can also combine R.C. with V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex for an invigorating massage. This creates a relaxing, spa-like experience and can help when your day demands that you be out and about earlier than usual. Its robust scent will help you perk up as your day begins. R.C. is also a great substitute for Aroma Siez™ in Young Living’s Raindrop Technique®.
From YL: Gesundheit! When sniffles and stuffiness hamper your little one, reach for KidScents® SniffleEase™, relaxing, quieting aroma. This Young Living exclusive is formulated for children ages two and up and can be applied directly to the chest or throat. A gentle blend of Eucalyptus, Palo Santo, and R.C.™, SniffleEase’s aroma helps ease feelings of discomfort and supports the feeling of normal, clear breathing.
